Polyurethane (PU) foam used in footwear and integral foam share many general aspects. Similar surfactants can be used in both systems. However, there are different types of silicone surfactants, as some are designed for PU systems based on polyethers (in integral PU and footwear) and others on polyesters (only in footwear PU).
Furthermore, in these very stable systems, many surfactants are also used that act as regulators or cell openers . This type of PU foam has characteristics closer to rubber than PU foam. For this reason, the manufacturers of these two types of foam request elastic properties and abrasion resistance, directly related to the soles of the shoes.
Foams must be resistant to daily wear and tear. Some important properties to look for are:
- Ross-Flex resistance : resistance to cracking due to continuous and rapid bending. It is measured with a machine that produces a repetitive bending motion.
- Hardness : intrinsic property determined with durometers. It has no simple relationship with fundamental properties.
- Tensile strength: resistance to breaking due to elongation force. It is measured by cutting a loop-shaped piece and observing the breaking strength.
- Cell regulation : a small and uniform cell structure is sought, avoiding surface defects. In these systems, partial cell opening is sought, since a closed structure causes defects.
Silicone stabilizers are relevant in forming processes and are used to improve performance and durability. Concentrol has solutions that adapt to each of the clients’ needs.
STB PU-2248
This reference is distinguished by an excellent stabilizing power, being ideal for polyurethane foams in both polyether and polyester, including footwear and integral applications. It offers a fine cellular structure without cellular opening, improving the surface appearance of the foam with emissions less than 2% and an average-high density. It is especially valued for its ability to emulsify and stabilize efficiently.
STB PU-2246 / STB PU-2253
These solutions have a high stabilizing power and are especially effective in creating a uniform and fine cell structure, without cell opening, which contributes to improving Ross-Flex resistance and tensile strength. They are suitable for uses that require low emissions and maintain an average-high density.
STB PU-2103 / STB PU-2104
These references offer good stabilizing power with a moderate cell opening, optimizing the surface appearance of the foam. With low emissions and a low-medium density, they are co-surfactants that contribute to a significant improvement in the surface finish.
STB PU-1231 PFJ / STB PU-1234 PFJ
With a more moderate stabilization capacity, these cell regulators offer good cell opening, reducing pinholes and improving surface appearance. With a low density, they are ideal for foams with an excellent cellular structure in the skin.
STB PU-2160
STB PU-2160 stands out for its good stabilizing power with a large cell opening and a notable positive impact on the surface appearance of the foam. Presenting emissions of less than 2% and a low-medium density, this co-surfactant minimizes defects such as peeling .
STB PU-2290 C / STB PU-2291
These references have a high stabilizing power with good cell opening, improving the surface appearance and reducing pinholes . With emissions less than 2% and a low-medium density, they are silicone stabilizers that offer medium cell regulation with a good capacity to improve surface appearance.
STB PU-4001
It is a silicone-free additive that offers excellent cell opening and a very positive impact on the surface appearance of the foam. With low emissions and a low-medium density, it improves the homogeneity of the foam and the distribution of pigments.
STB PU-4002
This additive provides good cell opening and excellent impact on surface appearance. With a low-medium density and emissions less than 2%, it is ideal for high-density polyurethane coatings and filters, offering flexibility and hydrophobic properties.
STB PU-4052
With good stabilizing power and good cell opening, STB PU-4052 improves the surface appearance of the foam and reduces pores. With emissions less than 2% and a low-medium density, it improves mechanical properties, making it ideal for foams that require resistance and durability.
